A Better World What is the secret that would make the world a better place? Imagine the world where segregation still existed everywhere in the world. In “Steve Biko: South African Freedom Fighter” by Jamestown Steve Biko demonstrates the importance of sacrifice by standing up against all of the people who treated people unfairly. In “Harrison Bergeron” by Kurt Vonnegut, Harrison stood up for his believes and tried to change the world to make it a better place. The world would be a better place if society could learn sacrifice. “Harrison Bergeron” by Kurt Vonnegut and “Steve Biko: South African Freedom Fighter” by Jamestown the reader learns the importance of sacrifice. To illustrate, “Harrison Bergeron” by Kurt Vonnegut the reader learns the importance of sacrifice. This story depicts the lesson that would make the world a better place is sacrifice for others. This quote demonstrates the lesson, "Even as I stand here" he bellowed, "crippled, hobbled, sickened" (paragraph 39). This quote shows sacrifice is important because Harrison sacrificed himself for others even though he knew he would get torched and die. He didn’t care if he was crippled, he cared about the impact he made on everyone one’s life. This quote also shows why more people should sacrifice for others, “Harrison tore the straps of his handicap harness like wet tissue paper, tore straps guaranteed to support five thousand pounds, and Harrison's scrap-iron handicaps crashed to the floor” (paragraph 40). This shows that Harrison did not care if he would get killed by taking a stand against the handicaps. He sacrificed himself for others for a better cause. “Harrison Bergeron” by Kurt Vonnegut shows that sacrificing for the greater good can make the world a better place. Another important element of the story “Steve Biko: South African Freedom Fighter” by Jamestown, black people were getting treated unfairly he stood up for them even though he knew he might die. The story depicts that the world would be a better place if people sacrificed for the greater good. This quote shows why more people should sacrifice for the greater good, "Steve was not willing to quit. Despite the ban" (paragraph 11). This shows Steve Biko sacrificing himself for a group of people because he was willing to pay any price to make the laws equal for blacks and whites. He was willing to die for what he believed in. One person can change the world to make the society a better for everyone else. This quote also shows why more people should sacrifice for the greater good, "During the early 1990s, the dam of white rule finally broke. One by one, South Africa repealed its racial laws" (paragraph 17). This shows that even though Steve died, after 20 years, his hard work paid off. His work paid off because he sacrificed himself for others and he spoke up when no one had the guts to do the possible changes to make the world a better place. The world would be a better place if more people stood up for their beliefs because Steve's speeches and pamphlets changed the rules for blacks and whites forever in the South. Steve Biko's impact was to sacrifice yourself for others in spite of what others might think. The readers can easily learn from Steve Biko that people can change the rules if they speak up and take a stand and a chance. Believe people can change the world. People in our society can learn something from Steve Biko; he was just a small man with a big voice. He changed the world because he sacrificed himself and his beliefs. Everyone has the potential to change the world. All people need to do is speak up, stand up, believe, and sacrifice themselves. When the readers finish reading this essay, stop for a minute and think of all the possibilities you can do to change the world. It only takes one person and one voice. Many may disagree that if everyone sacrificed for others the world would be in chaos. Too many people standing up for their beliefs could make the world chaos because if everyone stood up, there would be too much to handle and no one would anyone or anything to sacrifice for. Another way the world would be in chaos is sacrificing means you are willing to do anything to get what you want, even death. If everyone sacrificed for a certain cause, a lot of people would die and make our whole society crumble like the Twin Towers on September eleventh. The path to perfection or even making the world a better is almost impossible because there will always be someone against someone else. The path to making the world a better place will take a lot of time but, the path to a perfect world is impossible because everybody wants different things in the world. Moving on from all of the cons, the world would be a better place if more people stood up for others. Both stories “Harrison Bergeron” by Kurt Vonnegut and “Steve Biko: South African Freedom Fighter” by Jamestown show that sacrifice for the greater good can make the world a better place. The world needs to learn the importance of sacrifice because without sacrifice, we would still have segregation which we got rid of because people sacrificed themselves for others to make the world a better place to live in. You need to look through your heart and not through your eyes of the different sacrifices you can make to make the world a better place for everyone.
