In language arts we learned about the Greek myth "Daedalus and Icarus" the following week we wrote our own myth, and alternate ending, or wrote the story from a different character's perspective.
Icarus's PerspectiveIt was a sunny Friday morning at Crete. It was as hot as a 400 degree oven. It was around 10:00 am, King Minos asked my father Daedalus, to build King Minos a labyrinth which is a fancy word for maze. King Minos wanted me to come along with my dad. When my father finished building the maze, King Minos wouldn’t let him leave because my father is the only one who knows the secret of the maze and how to escape the maze. King Minos said he wouldn’t allow my father and I leave Crete so, he locked us in his palace or as I like to call it, prison. The prison had two beds, five windows, two couches, and some food and water. The beds smelled of garlic, vinegar and bad breath. The windowsills felt very dusty and I was grossed out. “NICE GOING DAD!!!! Now we’re trapped in the palace until we die!” I yelled. “It’s not my fault that we are trapped!” says my dad. “Oh I’m sorry, but you’re the one who got us trapped in the first place! You just had to build the maze! I thought you were supposed to be the smart one!” I yelled. “YOU’VE CROSSED THE LINE MR!!!!! You don’t have the right to call be dumb!” “I didn’t call you dumb. I said you’re not smart. There’s a difference.” “As soon as we escape this palace, you are in so much trouble!” “I’m sorry, but I’m pretty sure he are stuck here until death.” “PIPE DOWN!!!!! I’M TRYING TO GET SOME SLEEP!” yells King Minos. “Let us go Minos! I did what you asked for. I built your maze. I won’t tell anyone how to escape it if you let my son and I leave.” says my dad. King Minos grabs the door and slams it shut. As my father tried to figure out a way to escape Crete, I tried to fall asleep. My father woke me up. He was happy about something but, I’m not sure what. “Wake up son.” my dad whispered to me. “What? I’m tired.” I said. “I’ve been up all night collecting bird feathers and making something to escape Crete. I made a pair of wings! Now, we can fly out of this palace and escape Crete.” “That’s great and all but, you were collecting bird feathers?” “Yes but, you’re missing the main idea, we can escape Crete now.” “Dad, you’ve lost it. No normal father collects feathers. When are we leaving?” “Son, you are missing the whole idea, we can finally leave King Minos palace and leave Crete. We are leaving shortly. Forget about your things. It will be too hard to carry stuff and fly. Here’s what we’ll do. I need to wax the wings and stick them on your back or else your wings won’t stick. You need to do the same for me. Now, you must remember to stay close to me and listen to what I have to say. OK?” “OK father.” Once our wings have dried, we flew out of the palace. My father said not to fly too close to the sun. I did anyway. I was so happy to be the first boy to fly. The wax on my wings started to melt. When I was falling to my death, I knew I should’ve listened to my dad. Later on, I came back to life as a ghost. “Hi dad.” I said “Icarus! How are you here?” asked my dad with confusment. “Long story short, I decided to come back to life as a ghost because I can't die knowing your mad at me.” “I'm not mad at you. I feel responsible for your death son.” “It's not your fault dad. I should've listened to you. I was just so happy to fly. I wanted to impress you by flying higher than the sun.” “Thanks son. What am I supposed to do know that I'm free and you're dead. I'll be lonely without you.” “Live your life dad even if we aren't free together, I still am free because now, I can do anything in heaven.” “Thank you.” “Dad, I only have a few more minutes for you to see me as a ghost. Do I forgive yourself?” “Yes son, I do forgive myself. Listen, before you leave, I need you to know that you've grown to be a wise teen. You're always as kind as you can be and you're never selfish. I'm proud that I am your father. I love you Icarus.” “Love you too dad. Goodbye.” I was happy my father forgave himself. I lived in heaven, I could fly as high as I wanted too, no limits. I’ll admit, I do miss my dad. He's living a great life though. I learned my lesson the day I died. From now on, I will pay closer attention to the advice my loved ones and friends give me because listening to advice can really save someone in the future.
